are much wanted in several places. Tho. Atherton wants 6 immediately as he is competing for a farm prize and would not wish the judges to see the present ones, the Wheelwright on the Estate makes them at the reasonable charge of 12/- each & of good material. As he has been of much assistance to us regarding the Church I think we might oblige him

The amount is large but as to the farm account he has a set off in a large quantity of hay still unsold worth about £250. If you wish to see the bills they shall be forwarded, if you see no objection they must I suppose be allowed. I intend to invest in the funds the exact balance of rents which will be much reduced by the large outlay.

Old barn by the Wheelwrights

I have several times looked at this useless building in its present state and think two very tolerable cottages might be made out of it at a moderate cost and the others whom I have consulted are of the same opinion, it has a frontage to the road of about 10 yards, the only difficulty which presents itself is the want of a back outlet as we might be obliged to encroach upon the open square. Will you say if you think the idea is worth entertaining? Mr Watt allowed the Volunteers the use of it and they have a very large gun on the premises which however matters little.

Extract from letter 6/9/1872 from Geo Whitley

Old Barn

I thought this was in a fair way of being utilized according to the plan when behold, about half an hour ago, Major Newburn of the Artillery Volunteers called upon me to enquire if such was the fact and to explain that when Mr. Watt was connected with the Volunteers he gave them the use of the Barn and a small piece of land by the shore so long as they wanted them, and it was hoped they should not now be deprived of the privilege as they could not find accommodation elsewhere. I explained to him the inconvenience the Speke estate had sustained for want of Cottages and that we could not well avoid the opportunity we now had of adding to the number. He however begged I would represent the case to you and he referred to Mr. Blackburne of Hale for confirmation of his statement.

Extract from letter 6/9/1872 from Geo Whitley

Gates

Langshaw wants two, Edwards Ten and several others, must they be ordered? Crosby has got 14 gate posts out of the three oak trees fallen, he will attend to your orders regarding straightening up about the saw pit.

Extract from letter 18/9/1872 from Geo Whitley

The Old Barn

Roberts & Robinson are making an estimate for the alterations. Major Newburn writes me:

“I am in receipt of your letter informing me of Mr. Sprot’s intention to withdraw from us the use of the barn and also of his suggestion that we may find accommodation at Garston. I would merely remark that if we are unable to get some sort of shed for our gun in Speke the fall of our long established sub-division in that Township is doomed. I hope that we may have some little assistance from Mr. Sprot and yourself in getting accommodation of some sort for drill purposes. Thanking you very much for courteous attention to my representation. I am &c”

I am sorry to disturb the Volunteers but I do not see there is any remedy for it, and many of the inhabitants consider the Artillery practice to be a great nuisance, & I will be glad to be rid of it.

Crosby, Wheelwright

has been obliged to move off and I have an application from a respectable young man with a reference to John Sutton as his successor. Lunt also applies but I incline to think the place ought to be filled by a party being exclusively a wheelwright.

Extract from letter from 12/9/1874 from Geo Whitley

Wheelwrights’ Shop

I am glad to find that the young man (Lyon) was not intoxicated yesterday. Mrs. Woolliscroft who was in conversation with him while he was waiting to see you can testify to the fact and John Sutton bears him out. He is what is called a stutterer, having an impediment in his speech, which causes his address to be peculiar. I therefore think under stringent conditions we may accept him.
