Drain by Greyhound

Is progressing properly, Mr. Woodyer tells me he shall require more thorns and beeches as other demands have arisen for them, in consequence of the division of Peter Prescott’s garden into 3 portions and the continuation of the hedge where the Church wall ends which I had fancied was to have been carried on as a wall, it is rather late but if sent off without delay Woodyer thinks it will not be too late for planting. The former order has arrived being 6 days on the journey. The number wanted will be stated to you on Monday. I was rather surprized to hear of the large contract for the Church wall (£600)

Extract from letter 25/9/1873 from Geo Whitley

Prescott’s garden

This is a large space of Land containing about 0.  3. 20. Stat (X) measure and may properly be divided into 3 Gardens, one for Prescott himself & 2 for the Barn cottages, the garden at the back of his house being of little value, then comes the usual Speke difficulty of allowing Tenants to make alterations at their own expense & on leaving having a claim against the landlord for compensation. Prescott built the cottage at his own cost with the exception of bricks which were given to him by Mr. Watt the expense being £80, he also planted all the fruit trees in the front garden most of which are young and in good bearing condition, he also inclosed the back garden with a wooden fence, his rent is £5. 1. 4. and part of it (£2) is charged as rent for the front garden, this explanation of course being an intended application of abatement of rent for the 2/3rds of the land to be taken from him.
